There are many dates important to Venice, some celebrating local history and
traditions and some are national holidays, where shops, banks, offices and schools
are closed. Traffic towards the city is also heavier than normal and the authorities
have, at times, closed the access bridges to the city to ease congestion. Accommodation
is also in short supply and a booking is most certainly necessary. Several Jewish
special days are listed here due to the interest in the city's ghetto: during
such holidays, entrance to Jewish buildings and museums may be restricted. The
Jewish day begins at sundown the evening before the Gregorian date shown. For
further information on Jewish festivities, consult www.jewishvenice.com
